Certified Translators and Interpreters and Associate Members
There are two online member directories, one for Certified members and one for Associates.
PROFESSIONAL RECOGNITION -Certified Members have Occupational Title Protection
Every STIBC member who is Certified has at least four years of experience as a translator or interpreter, or one year of experience and a university degree. Many have several degrees and over 10 years' experience. All members must follow the STIBC Code of Ethics. Our Certified professionals benefit from occupational title protection in British Columbia, meaning only they can use the titles mentioned below. Members are certified by either by passing an examination in their languages of proficiency (the examination is administered and adjudicated on a national basis by CTTIC); or by the "On Dossier" process. Each certified member listing shows all of the certifications that member has and in which language combinations, as well as their contact information.

- Certified Court Interpreter (C.Crt.)
- Certified Conference Interpreter (C.C.I)
- Certified Medical Interpreter (C.M.I.)
- Certified Community Interpreter (C.COM.I.)
- Certified Terminologist (C. Term)
About Associate Members
Every Associate Member has at least one year of experience as a translator or interpreter, and many have several years of experience. Each Associate member must follow the STIBC Code of Ethics. Members are admitted after a close review of their credentials and/or passing one or more exams. Each Associate member is limited to having one language combination listed, e.g. (from) French to English. The combination chosen is usually from one language to that person’s native or mother tongue. Some Associate members have worked professionally in several language combinations. Contact information for each member is available in the Associate Member Directory. In general, Associate Members have not yet met the criteria to become certified with one of the titles as a Translator or Interpreter.
Most of the Certified Translators and Interpreters of STIBC started as an Associate or a Student member, then passed the tests or portfolio review to become Certified. Some Certified members obtained their title in another CTTIC organization in Canada.

Hiring a translator: Translation involves rendering a written text from one language into another language, conveying the message as faithfully as possible. Members who are Certified Translators (C.T.) have demonstrated their competence in one or more specific language combinations.

Fees for translation are not set by STIBC. They are negotiated by the individual translator and his or her client.

Translators qualify for certification by passing a written examination in their languages of proficiency administered and adjudicated on a national basis by CTTIC (the Canadian Translators, Terminologists and Interpreters Council) or by the on-dossier process.

Certified Translators are listed by the language combination(s) in which they have attained certification.
Interpreters work with the spoken language
- Hiring an interpreter: Interpreting involves orally restating as accurately as possible a message expressed by a speaker using another language.
- Fees for court interpreting are set by the Ministry of the Attorney General of British Columbia. If an interpreter works for a private client, the fee is negotiated. Conference interpreters also negotiate fees with their clients.
- Court Interpreters, Medical Interpreters and Community Interpreters are certified on the basis of written and practical examinations administered by CTTIC, or by the on-dossier process.
- Conference Interpreters are certified on the basis of a practical examination administered by CTTIC, or by the on-dossier process.
- Certified Conference, Court, Medical and Community Interpreters are listed by language.

How to use the online STIBC directory
By name: If you know the person you are looking for enter their name, or even part of it into the first name or last name field. For example, putting in "G" will give you any name with a "g" in it, like George or Jorge.
By language: Search for exactly what you need first:
e.g., a written document in Chinese to be translated to English:
Under Certified Translator, enter Chinese as Source, and English as Target
- For a court hearing, enter the language under Court Interpreter
- For a conference, enter the language

“Registered with ICBC” indicates which members provides services for ICBC clients (for example, translating driver’s licenses, identity documents).
